Since I started this blog, many readers have asked: If I can only choose one, which is better, the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum?

I’ve been to both museums numerous times, so I can tell you the difference between these two museums or how to pick the right one if you only want to visit one museum.

Difference between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum

Van Gogh Museum mainly focuses on Van Gogh’s artworks, life, and development as an artist.

In contrast, Rijksmuseum focuses on the extensive collection of Dutch art and history, not just from the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.

The collections include decorative arts, prints, sculptures, and historical artifacts.

One of my favorite paintings at Rijksmuseum. I could explore local life through these masterpieces.

They also take you back in time, helping you understand Dutch culture better and giving you a glimpse of what life was like in the Netherlands.

Which one should I visit, the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum?

I like both, but if I had to choose only one, I would visit the Van Gogh Museum because I love his style and technique so much!

If you have time, you should visit both. You can reserve your tickets with a time slot, so you don’t have to wait in line for the tickets at the door.

Once you enter, you can quickly locate the paintings you want to see.

Of course, if you want to enjoy at your own pace, you should have more time for your trip.

Visit the Van Gogh Museum, if you

If you admire Van Gogh’s colorful artworks like me, want to explore more about his life as an artist, or get inspiration from his style and color choices, the Van Gogh Museum is for you.

However, if you’ve seen Van Gogh’s work at other museums worldwide, you should visit the Rijksmuseum, which has some unique Dutch collections.

When I was at the Van Gogh Museum, his dedication and passion for art touched me.

It reminded me of the importance of doing what you like.

Visit the Rijksmuseum to see paintings by other Dutch painters besides Van Gogh.

Visit Rijksmuseum, if you

If you want to see more art than paintings or know more about the dutch history, the Rijksmuseum is for you.

Also, if you want to see the technique from Rembrandt and Vermeer, visit Rijksmuseum.

Rijksmuseum is a place that has more than just paintings; you can also see lovely sculptures.

When I first walked into the Rijksmuseum, I was in awe of the building itself—it is an art.

There is no right or wrong answer about which one you should choose; ask yourself, which one makes you more happy after the visit?

Questions about Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum

Only a few of Van Gogh’s works are on exhibition at Rijksmuseum.

Do I need to reserve the tickets in advance?

You should!

These two museums only allow online tickets; you can no longer buy them at the door.

Also, they are Amsterdam’s most-visited attractions, so prebooking your tickets as early as possible is necessary.

If the tickets are no longer available on the official website, visit Tiqets or Get Your Guide.

Can you recommend canal tours near the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum?

I like the small boat cruise over the big boat trip, but you can only buy their tickets without the combination deals.

In short, there is no combination deal for these small-boat tours.

If you like a more interactive and engaging boat tour with a cozy vibe and want to cruise like a local, reserve your spots now because they are very popular.
