Are you checking where to stay in the Amsterdam canal belt area? This post shares how to pick the best hotel in terms of price and value, what areas to avoid, and things to know before booking the rooms. Let’s start!
The best area to stay in Amsterdam – Canal Belt
Amsterdam is famous for its canals, so finding accommodation in this area is wise to get the most from your Amsterdam trip.
Where is Canal Belt Amsterdam?

Canal Belt is on the west side of the Amsterdam city center, around 10 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station.
Since the Amsterdam canal is a world heritage and is protected by the local government, there are limited spots for hotel rooms. It is best to book your room early.
What are the famous canals?
In this area, the world-famous main canals are the following
- Singelgracht
- Herengracht
- Keizersgracht
- Prinsengracht

It will be a great honor to stay in a hotel room with one of these canals, but the price will be higher. We also list the excellent hotels in this area with a great canal view.
Is it worth staying at Canal District?

The hotel price is high, that is no question, but is it worth it?
We stayed at The Times Hotel Amsterdam, right next to the famous Herengracht, and can say: yes, for sure.
Remember: you will probably visit this place once, or you can’t tell if you will ever return.
If you love the Amsterdam canal, book the room with a private canal view since we can guarantee that you will immerse in the Amsterdam canal vibe and not regret your decision.
Pros of staying at the canal area
Shops, tourist attractions, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance. You can also rent a bike and explore the Canal Belt District.
In addition, it’s relatively quiet, not like the Amsterdam Centrum area. You can enjoy the Amsterdam canal vibe but avoid the busy tourists, and it is quiet after eleven o’clock.
Cons of booking your canal room in the Canal District
It’s great to stay at a historical building; you get to experience the interior style of a renowned Amsterdam house; the only drawback is that the isolation could be better.
While staying in this area, the guests in the next room woke us up once or twice. However, we are deep sleepers, so we could fall asleep again quickly.
If you are a light sleeper, please do not stay here; look for places close to Museumplein , or choose Hotel2Stay in Sloterdijk or Inntel Hotel in Zaandam.
Pro tip when booking accommodations in the canal area
Secure your spots as early as possible.
As mentioned, there are few reasonable accommodations in the Canal District, so it is crucial to secure your spots early, especially for rooms with beautiful canal views.
Book Early to get the best rate for your hotel room
Book your room once your book your flight tickets.
The Amsterdam Canal Area is the most popular area for tourists. If your flight ticket is confirmed, reserve your room immediately to secure the best rate.
Most likely, the hotel price is high when booking, but the price will even go higher if you wait longer.
Make sure you have a room facing the canal.
Don’t just book the room based on the price!
Check the details of the room. Is it a room with or without the canal view? Do you have a big window? Is the room underground or on the first floor?
How to avoid high rates
If you are in the Netherlands for a week, visit Amsterdam on weekdays since the rate is lower.
Try to visit some other cities on the weekends since Amsterdam is the most expensive of all the cities in the Netherlands.
